Baby clothes need special care from day one. A baby’s skin is very sensitive, so you have to be careful what touches your baby’s skin. Brand new clothes should always be pre-washed before you put them away. Some clothes have been chemically treated and others gather dirt, dust and germs in a warehouse or at the store. This is true for sheets and blankets that your baby may come into contact with as well.
When you wash those items be sure to wash them at the highest possible temperature, per the clothing instructions. Ironing them will kill any remaining bacteria. There are certain detergents that are geared specifically for baby clothes. You can use these or use a regular detergent that does not have harsh chemicals and fragrances. We would also recommend not using softeners on baby clothes because of the dyes and perfumes in them.
Once the baby is using the clothes, they will inevitably stain them. It’s the nature of being a baby. So here are some tips on how to clean their clothes.
1. Remove as much of the stain as possible. Remove chunks and wipe up what you can.
2. Soak the item in cool water for approximately 20 minutes. You can add vinegar to the water to remove odors.
3. Stubborn stains may require a paste of baking soda and water. Placing this on the stain for about 20 minutes will loosen up the stain.
4. Launder the clothes per the tag instructions.
